Source: U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 5-year estimates, 2020–2024: median gross rent by bedrooms (B25031), median home value (B25077), median household income (B19013) and population (B01003).

  • * Median rent for all unit sizes, because the county’s 1-bedroom figure has a margin of error above 30%.
  • † Too uncertain to use: the margin of error is above 30% of the estimate (rent in Garfield, Musselshell, Phillips, Prairie and Treasure counties; household income in Meagher County).
  • Income needed is our full-budget calculation for a single adult at the Census rent shown (which includes utilities), with a paid-off car and 10% saved, after 2026 federal and Montana taxes. See methodology.

How to read these numbers

  • Census rents are lower than what you’ll be quoted. They are the rent current tenants actually paid, averaged over 2020–2024, including long-time tenants and subsidized units. In a few counties, such as Blaine ($330 for a 1-bedroom), the median is far below market rent, likely because many units are subsidized. For current asking rents, see our town pages.
  • Small counties have wide margins of error. In the least populated counties the survey sample is small, so treat their figures as rough.
  • County figures mix town and country. A county median blends its main town with ranches and small settlements, where rents and home values can be very different.
