About one in eight Montana workers (12.5%) worked from home in 2020–2024, and in Flathead and Gallatin counties it was closer to one in six. If your job moves with you, the main questions are internet at the address, the cost of housing, and how far you are from an airport.
How many people work from home

| Gallatin County (Bozeman, Belgrade, Big Sky) | 15.5% |

What to check before you move
- Internet at the exact address. In town, cable and fiber are common. Outside town, you may be choosing between fixed wireless and satellite. See internet and phone costs.
- Housing. The towns with the most remote workers are also among the most expensive. Compare towns in the town finder and cost index.
- Taxes. If you live in Montana, you generally owe Montana income tax on your pay even if your employer is elsewhere. See Montana income tax.
- Flights. If you travel for work, the airport matters.

Housing after the remote-work boom
Most Montana home prices roughly doubled from 2017 to 2025, and moves into Montana from other states have fallen back to about pre-pandemic levels, according to University of Montana researchers (Daily Montanan, February 2026). See rent and home prices by town.
